Becky is pregnant and frustrated. Her husband is more interested in the baby manual than her new underwear so she turns to the porn stash under the bed.

As the summer heats up, a brief encounter sends her speeding downhill towards reckless abandon.

From the brilliant mind of playwright Penelope Skinner – described as Britain’s “leading young feminist writer” (The Independent) — The Village Bike premiered at London’s Royal Court in 2011, where it had a sell-out, twice-extended run. It was the winner of the 2011 George Devine Award and won Skinner the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright.

Provocative, hilarious and absolutely crucial, Rachel Chant (Leaves, When the Rain Stops Falling) directs a brilliant cast including Gabrielle Scawthorn (Ride and Fourplay, Hurt), Benedict Wall (Home and Away, You Will Not Play Wagner), Sophie Gregg (Deathtrap, Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door), Rupert Reid (Blue Heelers, Julius Caesar), Kate Bookallil (Closer, The Letdown) and Jamie Oxenbould (The Literati, Dapto Chaser) in the Sydney premiere ofThe Village Bike, a darkly comic twist on presumptions about sexuality and pornography.

“That it’s a woman’s urge that’s being explored, in unsentimental and noncelebratory terms, makes The Village Bike an uncommon and revitalizing entry in mainstream theater.”  — New York Times,  “Skinner’s charming and elusive script – is brilliantly engineered.” – The Australian.  “mercilessly funny… and savagely insightful” – The Telegraph UK

The Village Bike is on stage at the Old Fitz Theatre, Woolloomooloo from June 7 to July 8.
