FORMER Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett has lost her battle with breast cancer. The singer, songwriter and actress died in hospital in New York City yesterday, aged 53.

Because she also suffered from multiple sclerosis, Amphlett had been unable to have radiation treatment or chemotherapy for the cancer.

Cousin to Australia’s Stompy Wompy Surfer Girl hitmaker and Bandstand favourite `Little Patti’  Thompson, Amphlett – born Christine Joy Amphlett on October 25, 1959 in Geelong, Victoria – carved her own name into music history as a member of the highly successful Divinyls.

AUSTRALIAN showbusiness has lost one of it’s most supreme talents with the death of Maestro Tommy Tycho, aged 84, in Sydney this morning – just a week before his 85th birthday. The well respected and much loved pianist, conductor, composer and arranger died of complications associated with pneumonia.

MEL Gibson was born in New York State, USA, in 1956. He moved to Sydney when he was 12 years old, but still regards Australia as his `home’. Mel was only 21 when he was offered the lead role in Mad Max, which attracted a cult following all over the world.

Hugh hops into a new role

THE December 13 release of Hugh Jackman’s latest movie, Rise of the Guardian, is the culmination of three years work for our much-loved Aussie star, soon to be known as Bunnymund or `Bunny’ (the Easter Bunny) for short.

In an interview with Channel 9′s Richard Wilkins, Hugh said he first began work on the animated production three years ago and was then called back from time to time as rewrites necessitated updated dialogue.

Dallas star succumbs to cancer

LARRY Hagman, who starred in top rating television series Dallas and I Dream of Jeannie, has died of cancer, aged 81.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas  in 1931, Hagman enjoyed a long and successful career as an actor, producer and director in film and television. His mother was Mary Martin, a star of Broadway.

Larry was in the middle of filming the Dallas comeback series at the time of his death.

UPDATE: BERT Newton is recovering in intensive care after quadruple bypass heart surgery at Richmond’s Epworth Hospital. The hospital confirmed that the five-and-half-hour surgery went according to plan.

ONE of our all time favourite Showbiz Personalities, Bert Newton, is about to undergo major heart surgery in Melbourne. Bert will have quadruple heart surgery today, November 24, and he will take the best wishes of a nation into the operating theatre with him.

And, the professional that he is, Bert still wears that winning smile in anxious anticipation of the over 5-hour ordeal ahead.
