AS PART OF WONDERLAND FESTIVAL

SOUTHERN Queensland audiences are in for a treat this November as acclaimed singer-songwriter Roz Pappalardo brings her Spumante-flavoured music-comedy Banging On The Door to the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Wonderland Festival.

The special performance marks the official launch of her one-woman show, which is a romp through modern fertility – one that is told in the way that only a seasoned musician such as Roz can – no fancy sets, no tricks of light, no costume changes – just Roz, her voice, a guitar, a trestle table and a script.

Banging On The Door is ballsy, irreverent, tear-jerking, stupidly funny, full of wit and empathy.

Roz tackles the often-taboo subject of fertility, flips it over, looks at the other side of it – telling the truth, crying, laughing and singing her guts out.

Her storyline explores the characters she meets while navigating her IVF journey – they are strikingly real and the experience is heartfelt.

Delving deep into the emotions that are raised with discussions of fertility isn’t an easy thing to do, but Roz tackles it with a sensitivity, and humour, that will see her story resonate with audiences.

“I think almost everyone has had a think about their fertility, their mortality, their future lineage, what it means to them and how they want to be part of that,” she says.

“I also think that many of us know someone who has had a baby, or who has tried to have a baby, and the issues that may arise from thinking about this new addition to your life – whatever the outcome may be.”

INSPIRED BY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

For Roz, the inspiration for the show was derived from her own personal experience.

“Well, having a crack at having a baby just happened to me… unsuccessfully,” she says.

“I’m an artist and this is how I process, in front of people, spilling my story in song form. I try and find a universal theme and emotion in the story that at once allows me to release, laugh, cry, dance and hope that someone else can relate to it.”

When it came to launching such a deeply personal show into the public spectrum, the Brisbane Powerhouse was the obvious choice for Roz.

“I feel so completely comfortable there,” she says.

“The venue and staff have become like family, and I feel safe there telling all sorts of stories, which are hilarious, intimate and special. They look after their artists very well and you know you can always relax and just concentrate on the performance.”

Roz Pappalardo has been performing in the Australian music scene for two decades.

As half of the formidable women in docs, Roz has earned acclaim for her original material.

Considered one of the country’s premier independent international touring musicians, she is invested in supporting local Queensland musicians and has been working tirelessly mentoring up-and-coming regional female singer-songwriters through a variety of projects.

She is also a revered arts programmer, and is currently writing her next solo album, anticipated for release in 2019.
