SPECIAL NIGHT FOR THREE COUPLES IN
50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY YEAR
By JADE HURLEY
A BEAUTIFUL STORY. I recently performed at the DANDENONG CLUB in Melbourne...and before the show I was asked if I would like to acknowledge some very special people in the audience.
THIS IS THE RESULT.
The picture above was taken after the show with myself and the Three husbands and wives - MARGARET and GARY TAIG, PATRICIA and GORDON WOOD and WILMA and MICHAEL WICKS.
The wives are two sisters and a cousin.
Each was celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on the night. They were all married in 1968. BUT IT GETS BETTER.
WILMA and MICHAEL were married in JANUARY 1968, MARGARET and GARY were married in FEBRUARY 1968 and PATRICIA and GORDON were married in OCTOBER 1968.
Such is the closeness of these three couples, that one of the husbands (GARY) decided to take it upon himself to surprise not only the three wives, but also the other two husbands.
He ordered THREE absolutely wonderful flower arrangements made up of (I think 10 in each) beautiful red roses.
Three quarters of the way into the show, I asked the three girls if they would come up to the front of the stage. The look on their faces was priceless as they had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what was happening.
After a bit of coaxing, they got up and came down through the audience to the stage.
It was then that I announced to the full house the significance of what I was doing and on cue, Christine brought the three bunches of beautiful red roses that Gary had organised on behalf of himself and the three husbands.
SO ... it was SURPRISES ALL ROUND.
I presented the flowers to the girls and after explaining the full significance to the audience, it brought the house down.
Then the girls (with their beautiful red roses) went back to their seats to be greeted by husbands Gary, Gordon and Michael.
Once again - this brought the house down.
I then dedicated and sang the very song that MY mum and dad danced their BRIDAL WALTZ to when they married ... a song that is on my latest "VAULT" CD, "ALWAYS".
The beautiful opening words are "I'll be loving you Always".
For me, THIS WAS A FIRST … as after almost 60 years of performing all over the world, I had NEVER been asked to do anything quite like this.
The absolutely wonderful thing about Gary asking if I would do this during the show was in his words: "Please play the husbands fairly low key … as this is the girls night out". HOW FABULOUS.
Just goes to show that after a LIFETIME in SHOWBIZ, there are still LOVELY SURPRISES.
Once again to Margaret and Gary, Patricia and Gordon and Wilma and Michael ... HAPPY 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.
