`Our Hugh' continues to shine
By SHIRLEY BROUN
Hugh Jackman has won his first Golden Globe for his performance in Les Miserables, capping off a remarkable run of major career achievements in the past few months.
After being immortalised on Hollywood's Walk of Fame Jackman has backed it up with the Golden Globe win which puts him well and truly in the running for an Academy Award, behind frontrunner Daniel Day-Lewis.
"Wow. Thank you," said Jackman when accepting the award in the Best Actor musical/comedy category.
The Australian-born hunk took `gold' amid a strong field of contenders including Silver Linings Playbook star Bradley Cooper, Jack Black (Bernie), Ewan McGregor (Salmon Fishing In The Yemen) and Bill Murray (Hyde Park on Hudson). He had previously been nominated for a Golden Globe in 2002 for his role in Kate and Leopold.
Daniel Day-Lewis, star of Lincoln, took home a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama while Argo beat hot favourite Lincoln to be crowned Best Motion picture drama. Director Ben Affleck with producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov accepted the award.
The other major acting categories were won by Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence.
Nichol Kidman was nominated for two Golden Globes including supporting performance in The Paperboy and the TV movie Hemingway and Gellhorn, while husband Keith Urban was in for a chance in the original song category for `For You' but both missed out on taking home `Gold'.
But they were in good company with the likes of renowned director Steven Spielberg also missing out in the Best Director and Best Motion Picture categories.
Jackman's Golden Globe success adds to a long list of wins including an Emmy, two Tony Awards, an AFI Award and two People’s Choice Awards.
There is no doubt Jackman will be looking forward to the Academy Awards which will be held on February 24. He can be assured his many fans back home will be cheering him on to round off an incredible career so far.
