Fremantle becoming a movie hub

FILMING CURRENTLY UNDERWAY ON COMEDIC DRAMA FEATURING

FREMANTLE, Western Australia which has recently promoted its Film Friendly City policy, has attracted yet another new production.

The comedic drama ‘How to Please a Woman’ is the debut feature from Western Australian writer-director Renée Webster, whose directing credits include the ABC TV series ‘The Heights’ and 'Itch'.

It stars English actor and comedian Sally Phillips, who played Shazza in the Bridget Jones films and co-created Smack the Pony, along with well-known local talent including Erik Thomson, Caroline Brazier, Tasma Walton, Hayley McElhinney, Roz Hammond, Cameron Daddo, Alexander England, Ryan Johnson, Josh Thomson and Myles Pollard.

The production has been underway at Fremantle’s Leighton Beach over the past week, and will also be shooting at locations in the West End and South Fremantle.

The City of Fremantle has been promoting Fremantle as an ideal destination for filmmakers, with a great mix of locations and lots of talented and creative people.

In August last year, film industry stakeholders inspected an industrial site in O’Connor to assess its suitability as a screen production hub which could be used as a stepping-stone while plans for larger studio facilities were developed.

Earlier this year the state government pledged $100 million towards the establishment of world-class studio facilities at Fremantle’s Victoria Quay.

The support on offer through the Film Friendly City policy includes having a single point of contact at the City of Fremantle to assist film productions with approvals, advice and local information.

The City will also waive or reduce filming permit fees, provide parking for production vehicles and assist in identifying temporary office space for the production crew and write letters of support to potential funding bodies or other stakeholders.

The level of support offered is based on criteria such as to what extent the film will promote Fremantle as a visitor destination, the size of the production crew and how long they’ll be based in Fremantle, the number of local jobs created and the production’s potential audience.
