On With the Show's
Flashback to Variety Today 1991
By ALVA Queen Bee Mary Schneider
WELL, here we are again ... another year over ... boy that was quick! Maybe I fitted too much into it. It has been a good year for ALVA (Australian Ladies Variety Association).
The committee's aim this year was to continue with our fundraising but more importantly, to highlight the comradery of which ALVA is so proud.
And that's exactly what we did. All our functions this year - the Gala Celebrity Ball, Luncheons, Art Union Opening and Closing Shows and various other events were very well attended by the members and friends and that makes it all worthwhile. We girls must stick together if we want to achieve our aim.
The Art Union drawing show was held on November 30, 1991 at Darling Harbour. Jupiter Band with Cheryl McLellan were fabulous as were the talented guest artists Maggie Scott, Liz Layton and Bobby Dennis. Many thanks to all.
The Toyota Corolla Seca Sedan was drawn at 12 noon and was won by F. Farina of Cherrybrook, second prize to N. Bryan of Seven Hills, third prize to Souphone Vignkham of Rosebery and fourth prize to Brett Fryer of Parramatta. Our Christmas party was held at Petersham RSL on December 9. Wonderful floor show with Maggie Scott and Marjorie Moon who both killed 'em.
Frank Ifield drew the raffle for us. He has been attending quite a few variety functions lately. So lovely to have him back in dear old Aussie for a while.
Next luncheon is the AGM when we vote in a new committee and I would like to thank the hard working girls we've had on committee this year for all their efforts. Won't be long before we reach our goal - our retirement home for Variety entertainers.
Another gem of news is that Robert and Suzie Gennari are now expecting their fourth child. We wish you the very best.
On a sad note, Holly Brown passed away recently at her Gold Coast home, the funeral was at Allambie Gardens, Nerang. Holly was one of the early ALVA girls and will be sadly missed.
Well, that's about all ... I would like to close in saying: May all your dreams come true in 1992.
