SENIOR HIGH MUSICIANS INVITED TO RESIDENCY

THE JAMES MORRISON ACADEMY OF MUSIC is set to inspire young and upcoming jazz musicians on the Gold Coast.

The Jazz Jam @ The Arts Centre, which is open to senior high school instrumentalists, is an exclusive five-day residency program to be held from September 19 to 23, 2017 that is designed to give young, talented players a chance to immerse themselves in all elements of being a jazz musician.

Designed and led by world renowned multi-instrumentalist James Morrison, the program will cover everything from jazz history, theory and improvisation to large and small ensemble rehearsals, repertoire selection, professional etiquette and jam sessions!

Throughout the week, participants will also be mentored by students from the James Morrison Academy of Music (JMA), gaining insight and getting advice from the next generation of jazz stars as well as receiving tuition and advice from James himself.

The residency will culminate in the opportunity of a lifetime, with participants coming together to form a big band that will feature alongside James and the JMA Jazz Orchestra during his public concert on September 23.

To be eligible to take part, students should be senior high school students (Years 10 – 12). Younger students of exceptional ability may also be considered, with strong recommendation from an instrumental music teacher or band director.

Entry to the program is via a two stage process. Students wishing to apply should be recommended by classroom, instrumental or private music teacher.

Stage One:Applicants will need to submit an audio recording of a short musical performance, along with a basic CV/biography of their musical training and performance experience. Students will also require a written recommendation from a classroom, instrumental music teacher, tutor or band director.

Stage Two: Applicants selected to continue to the second stage may need to submit further recordings or take part in a live audition at The Arts Centre Gold Coast in late May.

Applications for the program open Wednesday March 1 and close Sunday April 30.
