Flashback to Variety Today 1996

Michael Jackson

BEFORE he even arrives in Australia, Michael Jackson fans are queuing for hours to buy tickets to his long-awaited concerts in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. And, already, four more concerts have been added to his hectic program on the HIStory World Tour 1996.

Concert dates are: Sydney Cricket Ground Nov 14, 16; Brisbane ANZ Stadium Nov 19; Melbourne Cricket Ground Nov 22, 24; Adelaide Oval Nov 26; Perth Burswood Dome Nov 30 and Dec 2, 4.

The two and a half hour spectacular, based around the HIStory Album set and well-laden with hits and career highlights, will arrive in Australia and New Zealand in three Russian Antonov craft, the largest planes in the world, with 150 tons of equipment to be transported by 30 semi-trailers.

Each concert will require enough electricity to power a city of 300,000.

Michael Jackson, the singer, composer, producer, arranger, conceptualist and musician, has fashioned music that is the sheer embodiment of modern pop. His recordings have sold more than any other artist in the history of the medium.

History, the 1995 multi-disc anthology set which has achieved 6 platinum discs in the USA, has moved beyond the global sales level of 12 million, while `We Are The World' - which he co-wrote and performed on - is the biggest selling single ever with the project raising some $US60 million for famine relief.

Michael's show is a perfect marriage of music, vision and effects, according to promoters The Dainty Organisation's spokesperson. "Michael is the world's most breathtakingly professional live performance music artist of our time - so don't miss what is sure to be the most spectacular show ever to hit our shores."
