Variety Today (1992)

Recently, CILLA BLACK picked up the glittering prize as Showbiz Personality of the Year. The Liverpool, England, superstar of TV’s Blind Date was delighted as she clutched her British Variety club Silver Heart Award. However, she was outnumbered by the winners of the ITV personality award which went to four members of The Larkin Family from TV’s smash success `The Darling Buds of May’. They were CATHERINE ZETA JONES who stars as Mariette, joined by PHILLIP FRANKS who plays Charlie, her husband, and PAM FERRIS as Ma. DAVID JASON who plays Pop Larkin was absent, so sent a message `Ma save us a sausage sandwich’.

Among the other winners were film stars JULIE WALTERS and KENNETH BRANAGH plus BBC’s Australian personality CLIVE JAMES. Furthermore, CATHERINE ZETA JONES is about to star in a new movie with Hollywood legend MARLON BRANDO and TOM SELLECK. The film, about Christopher Columbus, called `Discovery’ is described as an adventure drama. Catherine, 22, flew to Malta last month (February) for the start of filming and it is predicted that, although the beautiful star is well known in Britain, this will give her a break for International fame.

EDITOR’S NOTE 2012: It certainly worked a treat for Catherine is a household name today!
